Congratulations to 2025 Arizona Scholarship Winner, Krystal Angulo!

Krystal's essay submission showed how her true character as a compassionate nurse shone through during a difficult time for a patient:

"During one of my clinical rotations, I was assigned to a patient who had been labeled "difficult" by some of the staff due to her frequent complaints and refusal of care. That day, my instructor and primary nurse were both busy, and no one was monitoring my interaction with the patient closely. When I entered her room, she was visibly frustrated, in pain, and feeling ignored.

It would have been easy to just complete the bare minimum, chart my assessment, and leave quickly, no one was watching, and I had other tasks waiting. But something in me knew that she didn’t need another person to rush her; she needed someone to listen.

I pulled up a chair, held her hand, and let her vent. I validated her pain, adjusted her pillows, and advocated to the nurse for a PRN pain medication. I stayed with her longer than required and even helped her brush her hair because she said it made her feel "more human."

No one witnessed that moment. I didn’t tell my instructor, and it wasn’t written in any care plan. But I left the room knowing I had made a difference in her day. Her final words to me before discharge were, “You were the only one who treated me like a person.”

That experience reminded me that character in nursing is about how we treat patients when the cameras are off and the grades don’t depend on it. It's in the compassion we give when no one is there to give us credit. That’s the kind of nurse I strive to be every day."

Congratulations to 2025 National Scholarship Winner, John Kerestes!

John's essay submission highlighted his determination to work diligently in solitude to create meaningful moments for others during his high school's final musical performance:

"I regularly do tech for my school's theater program, running lights for almost all of my high school tenure. I can recall for my final musical during this year, I wanted to go all out, as many colors and effects as possible, to ensure that I could help put on the best show our school has ever seen.

To do this, I spent much of my time that could’ve been spent at home, or having leisure time, up in the booth. I spent that time learning so many new functions and technicalities of my lightboard, solving error after error, with nothing but myself, a manual, and a few videos to help me out. Hours and hours I spent in solitude. No one to prove something to, no one to appreciate the new things I learned. But I never did lights with the intention to be noticed. I did it because someone needs to make sure the people on stage are seen. Someone needs to make sure that these stories get told, and that's what I do this for.

Nobody saw me pour hours into this show, all they saw was the lights twist and turn, glow and wane. They forgot about the lights the second they saw the actors take their final bows. No one saw me at that moment, all they saw was the show, and honestly, that's the best thing I could ever ask for. They saw my passion, my adoration for the script, my attention to the actors, and my dedication to the stage.

For me, there is nothing greater in the world than all these individual perspectives coming together to form one, wholly unique creation, with so many souls poured into one thing. To play a part in that play, that is my character, no matter if I'm seen or not."
