If you are thinking about staying in a hotel and have children, as child injury attorneys, we want to give you a few tips to help you make your stay a little safer. While we, as parents, all work hard to make our houses safe for our children, we sometimes forget these simple safety tips when we are traveling. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the trip and to get overly tired and forget to make sure everything is as safe as possible inside the hotel room. Here’s a short checklist that you can print out and bring with you when you travel:
Call the hotel before arrival. Tell them you will have small children staying with you and that you want the room as safe as possible for your family. Ask for covered outlets, no loose cords, no unsecured heavy furniture that could topple, etc.
Inspect the room for uncovered outlets, loose or dangling cords, hanging curtains, etc. Anything that the child can possibly suffocate on should be tied up, put away, etc. You can ask housekeeping to do these things for you if they haven’t already done so.
Ask for extra bathmats to place on the floor of the bathroom to prevent slipping.
Know your escape routes and talk to them about your children in case of an emergency.
Ask for a crib for your infant. Inspect it for cleanliness, and also make sure the mattress fits snugly inside the crib. Do not place loose blankets inside the crib with your child. Make sure the crib doesn’t have a gate that will fall or bars that the child can get an arm stuck in.
Make sure all doors have working locks and that your child can’t open them without your assistance.
