As car accident attorneys, we know how much traffic cameras bother some drivers. They issue tickets without any sort of public relations attempts and without allowing drivers to share their side of the story. However, they may also help reduce the number of drivers who break the law, such as speeding and running red lights.
They also help police by allowing them to review crash footage when intersection accidents occur. Recently, the city of Mesa decided to keep the cameras in place for at least two more years, according to AZ Central. However, the city council will continue discussing alternatives in attempt to make the cameras more cost effective.
Mesa Car Accident Information
The high number of Mesa car accidents that occurred in 2005 was what prompted the city council to install the cameras in 2006. At that time, there was more than one traffic fatality per week, totaling 64 fatalities in one year alone. The council put cameras in intersections around schools after one teen was killed by a distracted driver. In total, crashes at intersections with cameras have been cut nearly in half, dropping from 694 in 2005 to 370 in 2010.
Changes to the Mesa Car Accident Camera Program
There will be some changes to the Mesa car accident cameras this year to alleviate some of the complaints from the public. These changes include:
More cameras near schools.
Allowing public to register complaints or get information about camera-issued tickets.
Two cameras will be made available to neighborhoods with speeding complaints.
There will be a computer where drivers can review the camera footage.
