Twilight is the time of day between daylight and darkness. So while it’s not entirely light out, it’s not entirely dark either. When you add to that the fact that the sun is rising or setting (in your eyes), it’s easy to see why twilight causes problems for drivers. This is a time of day (or rather, two times a day) when many car accidents are seen in and around Arizona, so here are tips to keep you safe.
Twilight Safety Tips
1. Use your visor inside the car to block out some of the sun.
2. Keep sunglasses within arm’s reach. Don’t stash them inside a glove compartment or a purse, where you might need to take your eyes off the road in order to reach them. Instead, keep them in the console near the gear shift, on top of your head, or on the passenger’s seat.
3. Look as far ahead on the road as possible. All drivers need to be able to see what they’re driving into, so know where the sun is and when it’s going to become particularly difficult to see. When you reach those areas, look towards the shoulder of the road rather than straight at the sun.
4. Slow down. In order to give yourself more time to respond to pedestrians, wildlife, other cars, and anything else you may come across on the road, it’s always best to slow down when driving during twilight. Your vision will be compromised, and a reduced speed will give you the time you need to see possible hazards.
5. Keep a greater distance between your car and the one in front of you.
6. Put your lights on. This is one of the best ways to avoid an accident, particularly when it’s foggy or there are other conditions that could interfere with vision. This will not only let oncoming traffic see you better, but also those behind you see your taillights.
The sun cannot be blamed for rising and setting each day, and the fact that “it was twilight” will never be considered a legitimate excuse in court if a car accident does happen.
