Although retirement homes differ from nursing homes in the way that they’re designed (for elderly individuals who can live independently and don’t need as much medical care), the decision to place a loved one there can still be extremely difficult. After all, the retirement home staff will see your family member on a daily basis and provide him or her with care. So how do you know which retirement homes are the best?
When reading online reviews, are you really getting the whole story?
Do Your Homework
Imagine you’re looking through a ranking website, and you see a perfect five-star rating. Before deciding this is the retirement home for your loved one, visit the facility and talk to the current residents and their families. When you’re “on the ground,” you can see for yourself the condition of the rooms, the expressions of the residents, and the attitude of the staff. You can check out the social schedule, the planned activities, all the amenities, and get a feel for if your loved one would thrive while living there.
Also, make sure you check out your state's Protective Services Registry and ask for background or hiring information for the staff, as well as the home’s policy for dealing with emergency situations, complaints, and requests. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
If the Retirement Home You Chose Goes Wrong
There are many great retirement homes, and chances are that your loved one will be happy in any one of them. Unfortunately, not all retirement homes stay safe. Even if things seemed to be working out fine, one negligent or abusive staff member can change everything for your family member.
