Bicycling is one effective way to have fun and spend more time outdoors with family and friends. It is not only good for socializing but for one’s health as well. However, one drawback of bicycling is that bicyclists face a huge threat especially while they on the road.
Bicyclist deaths accounted for 630 out of 33,808 highway fatalities nationwide in 2009, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In Arizona, 25 riders died in 2009, sadly a higher number than in 2008, which only saw 19 fatalities.
Another bicyclist was struck by a green Isuzu Rodeo on Saturday afternoon, near 85th and Peoria avenues (AZ Central 02/12/11). The victim, a 50-year old man, was riding his bicycle and was hit by the car around 5:30 p.m. The driver, based on the witnesses’ statements, fled the scene, leaving the biker with some serious injuries. Further investigations are currently being conducted about the driver’s whereabouts.
