Even if you’re the best driver on the road, things aren’t completely within your control when you get behind the wheel. Not only do you need to worry about the other drivers out there, but also about your own car, and the things that could go wrong with it.
To make sure your vehicle is as safe as possible, it’s advised that all drivers perform vehicle inspections. This can help prevent minor issues from becoming something more serious, and can alert you to problems you may not have known existed. Some vehicle inspections need to be done daily, while others can be done weekly or monthly.
Daily Inspection:
Walk around the car and look for dents or scratches that were not there before. The underside and sides of the car should also be checked for leaking fluids.
Engine oil and washer fluid should be checked and topped off, if necessary.
Tires should be checked briefly to ensure they are properly inflated.
Confirm that headlights, taillights, and fog lights all work.
Confirm that both turn signals work.
Confirm that emergency lights and flashers work.
Check for chips on the windshield from rocks and other debris.
Test horn.
Inspect mirrors for damage and adjust as needed.
Weekly Inspection:
Air pressure in all tires should be gauged, including the spare.
Inspect the inside of the windshield and clean, if necessary.
Inspect wiper blades and replace if they leave streaks or gaps on the windshield.
Check that all heater and fan vents are in good working condition.
Confirm that seatbelts, and all their parts, work and latch properly.
Ensure the battery is properly secured and check for signs of corrosion.
Check transmission fluid level.
Monthly Inspection:
Tread depth on the tires should be checked and should be no less than two thirty-seconds of an inch.
Inspect first aid kit and replace any necessary items.
While these are all tips that can be done outside of the vehicle, or inside while not driving, there are also some ways to inspect a vehicle once it starts moving. These are:
Gently apply pressure to the brakes to ensure they’re working properly.
Listen for clicks, pops, or other noises that might indicate a problem.
Check the dashboard to make sure no warning lights are on.
