Phoenix is a beautiful city to discover on foot, walking around and soaking in all it has to offer. When most pedestrians head out to enjoy the city, they do so safely. However, some pedestrians always think that they have the right of way, and that vehicles must always yield to them.
In the spirit of National Safety Month, we’d like to remind everyone on the roads—motorists and pedestrians—to travel safely at all times. There are many ways to stay safe as a pedestrian, and most of them simply involve paying attention and being aware of your surroundings.
In Phoenix, it is illegal for pedestrians to cross a road anywhere but in the crosswalk when there is one. In some instances, such as in Phoenix’s busy downtown core, some pedestrians simply don’t find this practical. But the importance of it can’t be stressed enough. It’s the best way to keep you safe.
Safety Tips for Pedestrians
Unfortunately, staying in the crosswalks is not enough to keep all pedestrians safe. Other safety tips include:
Do not stare at your phone for long periods of time while walking.
When listening to music, always make sure you can still hear what’s going on around you, such as cars honking.
Always keep to crosswalks and sidewalks.
Do not push past other pedestrians who are also using the crosswalk.
When there is no crosswalk, cross the road at a well-lit spot and wait for a lengthy gap in between vehicles; do not try to “just make it.”
When there is no sidewalk, keep to the far left-hand side of the road, facing oncoming traffic.
Enter crosswalks slowly, and make sure you’re visible to vehicles.
Follow all traffic signals and signs at all times.
If walking at night, wear bright clothing (reflective, if possible) and carry a flashlight.
Arizona is a comparative negligence state, meaning that pedestrians who are in an accident may file for compensation if another party was to blame, even if the pedestrian was also partially at fault.
But when a pedestrian is in an accident with a motor vehicle, the injuries can be serious due to the fact that the pedestrian has little protection against a motor vehicle in a collision. Always make sure to look both ways and follow all safety practices when walking around Phoenix.
