Police and emergency crews responded to a serious accident early Saturday morning, September 21, 2019, after a single vehicle rolled over and crashed near Idaho Road. It is unclear how many people were inside the vehicle or why it rolled over, but three people were taken to a hospital for their injuries. The road was closed for several hours because of the crash, allowing crews time to clean up the debris.
Single vehicle crashes are more common than one might think. According to the Department of Transportation’s Crash Facts Summary, single vehicle crashes comprised more than 14 percent of all crashes and more than 32% of all fatal crashes in 2018.
Overturning is also a more common way to crash, with 2,606 rollover crashes in 2018. These types of crashes caused 23 fatalities and 713 injuries during the year in urban areas and 104 fatalities and 1,421 injuries in rural areas. While it is unclear why rollovers happen more often in rural areas, it could be because of the higher rates of speed and more open roadways.
Rollover crashes can happen for a number of reasons, including:
Driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, which impairs judgement and makes response time slower.
Driving while distracted. This could cause drivers to swerve onto the shoulder, sideswipe other vehicles, or overcorrect, leading to a rollover accident.
Swerving to miss an object or an animal in the roadway and overcorrecting
Faulty tires or a blowout
High rates of speed around turns
Icy road conditions
While most crashes happen during daylight hours when more cars are on the roads, there are still many accidents that occur at night and in the early morning hours. Most late night and early morning crashes happen on the weekends when people are out at events or spending time with friends and family, especially between the hours of 10 p.m and 4 a.m.
