Nearly all drivers in Russia have a dash camera – and for good reason. All one needs to do is look at some of the footage found online to know why. Images of out of control tanks careening onto busy highways, meteorites streaking through the sky, and endless fights between intoxicated drivers are just a sample of what can be found. By all accounts, having a dash camera is the only way Russian drivers can back up the facts of whatever outlandish accident they may have been involved in.
So, if everyone in the former Soviet Union has a camera rolling in their car shouldn’t Americans be doing the same? After all, have you seen the roads today? It’s a madhouse out there!
Yes, and no, say many experts. Recent news reports suggest dash cameras might not be the miracle cure that many drivers are looking for. “Cameras in personal cars? It’s a nice thing to have, a lot of fun, but we really see more advantage in a commercial vehicle,” said a AAA insurance representative. “There are a lot of people who will run into a commercial vehicle with a big brand on the side.”
But, for the everyday American commuter, the auto club suggests there are no real cost savings involved. Experts also warn that any footage taken from your own camera could be used against you, if you happen to break the law.
So, while a dash camera may make a great gift and fun toy, it won’t necessarily rescue you from a speeding Russian tank. However, should you be involved in a car accident and suffer serious injury due to another person’s reckless behavior, you may have grounds to pursue legal action.
