A Second Home for Troubled Students
We were so excited to visit Mesquite Junior High in Arizona this month to present Ms. Matalon with The Husband & Wife Law Team’s Teacher Appreciation Award. Ms. Matalon, who received over 20 heartfelt nominations from current students, parents, and staff, was celebrated for the incredible love and support she pours into her school community every day.
Ms. Matalon is a dedicated educator who serves as both the English department chair and student council chair. Her impact extends far beyond the classroom walls; she is known for attending her students' games to ensure they have someone in the stands cheering for them, especially when family members may not be able to attend.

Her selfless nature was truly on display during mandatory state exams. When Ms. Matalon realized many students might not receive the requested parent's notes of encouragement, she took it upon herself to write personal notes to every single student she knew would otherwise go without. This level of care is why many describe her not just as a teacher, but as a "second home" for children coming from unstable environments or group homes.
Parents and colleagues alike describe her as a phenomenal educator who builds a strong foundation for student success while remaining deeply aware of their personal well-being. This recognition celebrates Ms. Matalon’s commitment to being a role model and a trusted advocate for every child who enters her classroom. Her award includes a commemorative plaque and a $500 gift.
Congratulations, Ms. Matalon, for your selflessness and for providing such a vital sense of belonging and support to your students!
